Separated by pain and betrayal, Karou and Akiva both struggle to empower their own rebellions, but is a better future even possible with so much stuff of nightmares between them?

The sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bones is full of blood, death, pain and the tiniest glimmer of hope. The story itself is very engaging and as easy to follow through time and character transitions as the prior book. It includes:

  • Use of pain fueled magic
  • Some language
  • References to making love and full nudity
  • Many references to sexuality, some quite crude
  • Rape attempt and multiple mentions to / awareness of rape
  • Desire to throw pee at someone discussed
  • Lots of injuries, killing, and death
  • Torture (Blood and some mutilation described)
  • Mutilation of corpses

The level of detail in the sexual references and situations in this series seems more appropriate for an adult audience than its placement in the young adult category would suggest. I recommend parents preview this series if they are concerned about sexuality or violence.
